“Door to door” is one of the most used phrases in logistics and one of the least defined. To one provider it means a truck at the seller’s gate and a truck at the buyer’s. To another it means a long list of services behind that truck. The difference only becomes visible when something goes wrong.
In its fullest sense, door-to-door means the cargo is moved and managed from the seller’s premises to the buyer’s, with one partner accountable for the journey.
That typically covers collection from the origin, packing and palletisation where needed, export customs clearance, the main carriage by sea, air or road, import customs clearance at the destination and final delivery. Each of those steps is separate work, often done by separate parties. Door-to-door brings them under one plan.
A shipment moving through several parties passes through several handovers. At each one, cargo waits, information is passed on, and responsibility moves from one hand to another. Delays tend to hide in those gaps, and when they surface, each party can point to the one before.
With a single accountable partner, the gaps are managed instead of discovered. Documents are prepared with the next step in mind. A delay at the port is known to the team arranging the delivery. One partner can see the whole journey, which is the only way to coordinate it.
The phrase leaves several things open, and they are worth asking about directly.
Duties and taxes are the first. Whether they are included, and who pays them, depends on the commercial terms between buyer and seller as much as on the logistics provider.
Special handling is the second. Cargo that needs temperature control, hazardous cargo handling, fumigation or oversized equipment may fall outside a standard door-to-door arrangement.
The third is visibility. A single partner is only an advantage if it can tell you where the cargo is, at any point, in plain terms.
Which steps are included in the price, from collection to final delivery, and which are not? Who handles customs clearance at both ends, and who is accountable if it is delayed? And how will you be updated during the journey, and by whom?
A partner who can answer these without hesitation has defined its service. One who can’t is selling a phrase.
